Aprilia RS 50
Aprilia has seen fit to once again change the name of their entry level two stroke street bike. Essentially the same bike as the previous RS4-50 the moniker going forward returns to the previous century’s designation. Last year we saw the RS4-125 4T receive a similar adjustment to accommodate celebrating 25 years of the RS 125.

While this was quite a stretch even for a marketing department, with the RS 50 the switch is certainly more apropo. The current bike still employs the same twin spars as the late 90’s RS with a redesigned swing arm, subframe, and engine cradle to support the newer Derbi engine and the more modern styling.

Available in two basic liveries, black or silver, it is most unfortunate that Aprilia chose not to offer the 50 in the RS-GP Replica Racing livery available to the 125. One of the greatest features of the RS 50 has always been the replica liveries. It’s quite disappointing to see this tradition diminished.

For more detailed information check out Aprilia’s new RS 50 on their website.
Aprilia wrote:Symbol of Aprilia’s sport DNA, RS 50 is still the point of reference for sport bikes dedicated to younger riders, a concentrate of content and style, ready for the best performance on the road and on the track.

Born out of racing, aggressive, capable of expressing dynamic character and light weight in a personal and recognisable style, RS 50 highlights Aprilia’s passion for sport with a concentrate of technological refinements worthy of a true Superbike. Exclusive ergonomics of a true super sport bike, sleek fairing, aluminium frame, a generous engine and the best components and technical features in a look that is now even closer to that of the RSV4 superbike.

For people interested in this bike there already exists an exceptionally supportive third party scene. For instance check out the Bling and Farkle post. There’s also major support for engine upgrades including nearly 50 third party top ends from inexpensive stock replacements to over 100cc high performance models.

In addition to that there are many cranks, pipes, clutches, intakes, reeds—pretty much everything you can think of is available for these Replica Racers.

Yes, Italy (for the most part).

Yes, but it is tricky. They exceed all US emission controls, but aren't currently imported into the States, because Piaggio doesn't feel that there is a market here. The folks at AF-1 have told me that they tried to bring in the RS4 previously, and nearly accomplished it, but there was a change of management at Piagio, and that sank the opportunity.

They also informed me that when they had the RS 50 they always sold out of them. Indicating that there is a market for these bikes in the States—it just needs to be exploited. ;)
